halo 2: tip of the week: #3 Know your Enemy

3 is a charm, and I want to give you final words of wisdom,
Learn the maps to a basic level (where are your weapons of choice to be found?). I only know a couple of maps at this point. You should have a basic understanding of the layout if you are to survive.

Then there is knowing who you are going against. Things I have learned about everybody, and you can react/change your behaviors accordingly:

Me: I strafe. I'm terrible with the shotgun, and I'm ineffective when I'm losing. Own me with the vehicles early on. Hit hard, concentrate on me and I'll defeat myself. I get in and out of the zone.

Mel: Same situation. Super competitive. Break the composure, and she's beat. Add some post-game smack talk to ensure future victories. Mel to this point is extremely aggressive. Backing off and wearing her down is your best bet.

Gabe: Keep your distance. Strafe. He likes the sword and melee attacks. A withdrawal/while attacking will take him down. Set up ambushes for him. He will chase you until he dies.

Nicholas: A good sniper, and a good sword user. Be aware of his location, and communicate it to teammates. Strafing works well on him. When he carries a sword, shoot him while backing off, keep him out of striking range. When you need to reload, turn tail and run. Reload while running. Like gabe, he will follow. Eventually he will go down. Short to medium range, strafing works very well against him. He has the mechanics mastered, and great reflexes, but is predictable and overly courageous. "The confidence of youth"-Cold Mountain's villain's last words.

Traci, Jenn and Jan: mental diehards. Tend to hang around cover-selective killer/ambushers. Think twice about heading to base for safety when they lurk within.

Brian: Good communicator, solid player, Great sniper. Stay aware of where he is. Move and be aggressive. Patrol potential sniper spots, stick to cover. work the mental game by prioritizing him.

Christian: Likes to board vehicles. Take him on in a vehicle, and he will attempt to board. By keeping your distance, you can take advantage of his aggressiveness.

Tucker: Getting increasingly better. Good vehicular manslaughterer.

Larry/Tim: beginning to rack up the kills. Be on the lookout. They are now players. It will be interesting to see these guys continue to develop. They will be crafty opponents. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Halo 2: tip of the week: #2

I'll try to condense this:
Terms: FOV-field of view

WEAPONS:
Reload constantly (x button). Never enter a fight without reloading.

battle rifle: Take advantage of the range capabilities. Zoom in and out often keeping your surroundings in mind. Aim for the head, and keep your distance as this gun will give you an advantage at distance. Same goes for the covenant carbine. Defeat the battle rifle by approaching either in a zig zag pattern. Up close, the smg will tear up the guy with the battle rifle. Take advantage of the battle rifle's limited FOV.

Sniper:Same as above, but get somebody to cover you. Pick high points on the map, and move after every few shots. A sniper who uses multiple vantage points is tough to beat. Stay out of the open and communicate with teammates to help pinpoint the sniper. There are some fairly predictable locatioins to snipe from. Bumrush these locations. Keep Moving.

SMG: My weapon of choice for short to medium range 1 on 1 fighting. Master chief is ambidextrous. Always carry this in pairs or with another gun. If you have only one, avoid contact with enemies until you can dual wield. Remember dual wield by holding y when you pass over another weapon. SMG is weak if you only carry one. Again, strafe keeping the reticle on the heads of your opponents. Reload this thing often.

Shotgun: I'm terrible with this, because it's slow, and I strafe which means I miss often. It's a one shot killer if you like to run at the target-aim for the upper chest. Worthless beyond about 2 meters. Defend against it by backing out of its effective range. If you are indoors, back out, leaving grenades behind. The shotgun toter will have to follow in order to kill you, make him/her run a gauntlet. Same approach with defending against the sword.

Needler: I love these things, the pink guns that shoot tracking pink darts. Dual wield, rush in close, unload with both triggers, run. Don't go toe to toe with this one. Pick up more ammo. Repeat. If you can get the drop on somebody, this can be unstoppable. You can replenish ammo often on Beaver Creek.

laser pistol and pistol: worthless.

Missile launcher: Keep moving, and choose shots wisely. Shoot at the opponent's feet. It's nearly impossible to directly hit bad guys with this, but the explosion is more than enough to take multiple kills. Aiming at a vehicle and holding the trigger will now(Halo 2) give you a lock-on. The driver is pretty much toast if you can get a lock. Aiming into enclosures is a lot of fun. Defeat the launcher by backing out of range. Missiles are slow and strafing can make a missile kill nearly impossible. At short to medium range, pray.

Grenades: Don't forget to use them. Sprinkle liberally while battling. More often than not, they will land behind the bad guy who unknowingly will back into them. Grenade kills are hard to get, but they soften your targets handily.

Laser rifle: Weak alone. Used in pairs or supplementing the SMG, the combo gives a great short and medium range carnage kit. Be prepared for the overheat. Like the needler, go in fairly close, let loose, and back out before you are made helpless by the cooldown. This is another good strafing gun, although the shots are slower than those of the SMG.

Seeing what your opponents are carrying and reacting accordingly is probably the second most important strategy in the game. Don't go against people who outgun you, and secondly, get yourself to the position that will best enable your gun. If they carry two SMG's and you carry one, try to find some more equipment, or if you can approach without being detected, go for the bash attack (b button).

That's it for now.

My new stuff

I just want to send a many thanks for my new Christmas presents. I have Greyson washing my new pants today so that I can take them down to Lousiana with me. When I return, I may have my National Geographic waiting for me. I also tried out my new axe last night. It did a wonderful job of chopping. I think I now need a small hatchet for making kindling. Greyson set up my new Tivo for me and I should be able to watch my soaps, and favorite late night shows and any other show I desire at any time and fast forward through commercials. And if my father is watching live TV with me and says "what did he say", I just hit the 8 second replay button and it goes back so he can hear the line again.

We haven't yet got a dvd to try to burn the guitar music to, but I promise to have it mastered by the end of January. Tim and I can practice for a play off like dueling banjos.

Anyhow, we had a fun time with everyone. We appreciate Grandma letting us stay at her house. We hope you all have a good Christmas and look forward to seeing you for the New Year's tournament.

halo 2:tip of the week#1-Strafing

OK troops. You shared your pinnochle knowledge with me. This is for you to check out if you are so inclined. I have so much more to tell you, but here is something to think about in the meantime, and is the absolute best tip for you besides "know your enemy" (which I will explain in another installment as it relates to Halo 2)

terms:
FPS-First Person Shooter (through the eyes of the protagonist)
IRL-In Real Life
reticle-the little mark in the center of your screen that indicates where the gun is aimed

Halo 2 is an FPS
The FPS attempts to simulate RL phyisics as closely as possible. So there are several things taken for granted IRL that can be applied to the FPS:

1. A moving target is tougher to hit than a stationary target. Most important point in the game. You move, you are harder to hit, you get killed less, yielding fewer points to the opposition, you live longer getting points of your own, you waste no respawn time, and you get to keep your cherished rocket launchers, vehicles, etc.

2. By turning your view (using right stick) in a circle, your lower body (legs) will eventually have to follow because it is modeled after the human body. Twisting at the neck and waist will allow us only to turn our view so far.

3. Running straight at or away from the enemy gives him/her essentially a stationary target. He aims straight ahead at you and lays on the trigger. If two people are running headlong into each other with this technique, the winner will be decided practically at random, or dependent on some other factors (wounds, power of weapon etc.)

This brings us to Strafing, which in FPS terms, is lateral movment (heavy left or right use of the left thumbstick, the motion stick) while keeping the reticle on the enemy (more subtle adjustments with the right stick, the aiming stick).
This coordination of the sticks takes some practice, but whether or not you rack up the kills when you begin trying it, you become infinitely harder to kill, and that already goes a long way in preventing the bad guys from scoring. This also buys you time for reloading and planning and ensures that no one can approach you from behind. If you are going against multiple opponents, strafing allows you to continue to survey the field, and even if you don't know exactly where they all are, you are a moving target for all inolved.
A strafer will always kill a non-strafer, all things being equal. A strafer, out-gunned, will still kill a non-strafer a majority of the time. Seeing the IRL rule #2 above, you can deduce that by continuing to strafe, you will end up circling behind an opponent, which is a great place to be. This will happen every time against a non-strafer. The guy who runs at you when you are strafing actually assists you in getting behind him. Once you get behind him, you can then get creative. If someone notices that you are moving sideways (you begin to take some bullets), simply switch directions, and strafe the other way. You can randomize your movements depending on who you are fighting.

The ghost ( the purple one-seater) is the only vehicle that can successfully strafe, and is consequently, in my opinion, the most deadly object in the game- to the point that it almost sickly imbalances the game.

Assignment #1: Go play a game of dodgeball. Stand still and throw. Then, try lateral movement while throwing. In Halo 2 (or Halo 1), find a tree or rock, and strafe it, first trying to keep your reticle on it, then test by shooting, seeing where the marks end up on its surface. If you are beginning to group the marks fairly tightly while you are moving sideways, you are getting the technique. Remember when you adjust your aim as you strafe, there is little if any vertical correction needed. This means that strafing is mostly side to side movements of both sticks. I want to see everybody using their new strafing skills at the tourney.

Not completely barren

Warning!!! Girl talk ahead!!! Turn back now if you don't want to read it!!!

I went to a fertility specialist yesterday with Greyson. The doctor said that I am not ovulating and therefor not getting pregnant. I am now taking a hormone (that I am not producing) that blocks another hormone and long story short it should induce ovulation. So yes, I am on fertility drugs now. And yes, I now have a 10% of twins and a 1%chance of triplets if I get pregnant. He expects me to get pregnant in the next 3 months and if it doesn't happen by then we will take more "involved" actions.

We also have to keep the old temp. chart that I have to fax to the doctor and we have to circle our "coitus" times. There is pressure to perform now. If you want I could post the charts for you all to examine after each month and we could have a running commentary.

OK, too much info.

It's beginning to smell alot like Christmas

Today is the Christmas program, and India walked out of the bathroom with her red dress on, her face aglow, and her small hand wrapped around the glade can. Now this glade is a seasonal Christmasy looking bottle, and does have a cinnamon scent. So she asks if I will spray her so she'll smell like Christmas for her program.
I did. She smelled like cinnamon glade.
She walked away, her lips pursed into a grin, then said," No-one else will smell like me."
I think she might be right on this one.

pig ears and R rated material

We gave a dog a pig ear with hair on it. Yes, the kind of bristley, soaked in broth and dried pig hair. It was really gross, and a reminder that this was indeed a pig's ear.

Tuck has a fascination with the word Bitch. He equates it with poopy-head or boogar-face.
When he prayed the other night, he said, "Please God, help us not say Bitch. Bitch is not a nice word, and .... well, just help us say good things. Not Bitch, but kind things. Amen."
He proceeded to say that although he'd used the word "Bitch" it was just explaining.

India said, "Tuck, just say 'The B word.'"
I dared not look at Tim for fear of busting up, but I watched Christian with a smirk on his face.

So please, don't say the B word. It's just not right.

Fudge

Okay, the fudge is made. And if you guys go through all of it, somebody is gonna to be sick. Maybe even several sombodies. I just made one batch of peanut brittle. Wasn't sure how popular that was. The party mix is in the oven. Still need to find the almond bark for Jennifer's pretzel candies. I'm trying to keep out of the peanut butter fudge, my personal favorite.

The pool is NOT cold. It is perfect as Grandma Far Away, who swims there regularly, can attest. I have 4 off site activities in mind but don't image we can do all: play in gym, swim, skate and play in snow. Don't think you can just vote swimming off.

Back to the kitchen.

Gift exchanging & other activities

First of all, Brian said the Deans are coming Friday night right after Jennifer gets done with practice. He also said they are bringing the trailer so that should make for enough beds. I am sure Grandma Far Away would offer a bed as well if anyone wants to go there for the night. Could make for a quieter sleep.

I am wondering about presents. I am assuming the kids, big and small, will want to go ahead with their gift exchange. What about other stuff. Should we be putting other presents we have under the tree out of sight for the kids to unwrap at anther time or are we doing the whole shebang this weekend? Except for Santa, of course.

I need some organization here!

I'm thinking skating, swimming, basketball, singing, movie, snow play all as possible activities. This will take a very efficient plan to get all that in. Then there will be some pingpong and board games here at home.

I'm getting excited now.

Our yard/house are lighted so plan your arrivals after dark for the full effect. I'm pretty happy with it this year. Simple yet elegant.

See you soon!!!!!

Halo 2thousand5

Mel set up the brackets for the New Year's tourney, and suggested the 2vs2vs2 structure so we'll go with that. Preferably, we could use a slightly larger TV, 1 more xbox, and another 2 copies of the game. i might end up getting an extra copy if Santa decides not to go with Halo 2 for my in-laws.

Teams:
Larry/Nicholas
Greyson/Tucker
Jan/Gabe
Mel/Traci
Tim/Jenn
Brain/Christian

OK good night....

aaaaahhhhhhh

Finished my class website. I thought it'd be fairly straightforward, but the browsers were seeing it differently. Totally aggravating. The problems with simple grid websites is that if there is any alignment problems with the pieces, the seams are terribly obvious.

Anyways, that's it. I about went insane making the project that numbered over 200 pages. I spent practically every waking moment working on it. My body is atrophied. My neck is permanently kinked, and my brain is supersensitive smoking summertime burger that I left on the grill too long Turned in an essay last night. Turned in an essay last wed. Took a midterm. I think I likely have a b in architecture. Very slim chance of an A if the curve goes my way. There were a lot of strugglers in that class. That last test was rough, and I unwisely crammed for it instead of absorbing it gradually. Didn't have a lot of options on that however. Have a pretty good shot at A's in the other classes.

I loved Death of a Salesman, In the Wilderness, Lone Star in particular, loved Greek and gothic architecture (again), loved website design, and loved communication design. I could have done without the last 3 weeks or so of all of it. Pure stress applying the learning, and learning a fraction of what I picked up in the first half. Disabling both computers was something I really had a tough time with. It was just sad, and really untimely.

Chat with me. I'll be on more at least for a while, while I'm cranking out the sweethome site. I'm looking forward to seeing all of you.

Weekend of the 17th

Just so it is official,
Melanie, Greyson and Ada are going down to mom and dad's on Friday Dec. 17th ~9:18pm.
We will be leaving either the 19th or 20th.

Traci has told me they are probably going over on the 17th and will be staying a week.

Jenn was undecided when I got an email from her this morning.

I will pack my swim, skate and snow outfits so I am prepared. Ada only wants to participate in the snow events. Well I take that back. She would like to participate in all the events but I only invited her to snow if we have time.

I was also wondering if there are too many people if Grandma would be up for having Me and Greyson for a sleep over.

See you all soon.

Wish list- last chance

I think many of us have finished our shopping, but just in case I wanted to give one last chance for people to list there Christmas lists. So please post a few more ideas for fun. And I don't want any.. "Your company is all I need"

the name game

Grandma,

If you could tell us what this dog looks like, it might help with the naming.

Do you like "pet" names or "people" names??
